Wool is the most polluting fiber due to the high emissions from livestock farming. However, it is natural, biodegradable, and we cannot do without it. So how can we make it more sustainable? Thanks to Hemp, whose CO2 impact offsets the high emissions of wool.

the problem of the color
When you combine two completely different fibres, you face a problem that is often costly and difficult to solve: colour. Each fibre absorbs dye in a completely different way. That’s why Lanapa presents an additional technical challenge: dyeing hemp and wool in two colours that work well together.
Our warm inventions
In 2019, we invented Lanapa®. In 2025, Lanapa® evolved: 51% Merino Wool and 49% Hemp, with the two yarns worked together instead of twisted, for a softer fabric that is also easier to produce. In 2025, we also introduced Cashemp as an even more refined and warmer solution. These are our ideas for smarter, natural, sustainable, and different warmth.
the intelligent padding
Our exclusive Bavarian Wool (no mulesing) and fine Hemp padding combines the warmth of wool with the thermoregulation of Hemp. A thin layer is enough to make the garment as warm as traditional goose down or synthetic material padded jackets.
THE LANAPA® PADDING
THE BAVARIAN WOOL
The Merinolandschaf (Merino Landrace) has its origin in the Württemberg area, Southern and Central Germany. In the 19th century local sheep breeds, especially the Lower-Rhine-Marsch sheep, were crossbred with Merino sheep from Spain and Southern France.
With more than 30% of the German sheep stock, it is the main breed in the Country. This white wool is
merino type with 26 to 28 microns.
Merino Wool has long been regarded as one of the finest and softest wools with properties that lend themselves to aerobic activity and long stays in the outdoors: body temperature regulation, warmth when wet, wicking or the ability to draw moisture away from the body and antimicrobial properties that help
keep garments odour free. Even while wet, wool will generate heat up to an absorbency level of 30%.
THE HEMP FIBRE
Hemp creates one of the most eco friendly fiber in the world. Hemp plant requires no pesticides, crowdsout weeds without herbicides, controls erosion of the topsoil, and produces oxygen. It is a renewable resource that can be cultivated in as little as 100 days and is the world’s most versatile fiber.
Hemp insulation provides all the warmth and softness of a natural textile but with a superior durability
compared to other materials. That's why it perfectly matches with Wool.
SUGAR PLA
To improve durability of the padding, to make it water washable and to optimize the union between Hemp and Wool, a little percentage of Bio PLA (or Polylactic Acid) has been used in the padding. It's a type of biodegradable plastic derived from sugar cane, produce by Total Corbion.
Total Corbion PLA predominantly produces PLA bioplastic made from raw sugar from cane in
Thailand. Over the years, both Corbion and Total Corbion PLA have significantly improved the
internal process yields and is, as mentioned above, able to produce 1 kg of PLA using just 1.6 kg
of raw sugar.
Science of lanapa®
The combination of wool and hemp in a fabric creates a physical and chemical structure that brings together the best qualities of both fibers, resulting in a material with unique thermal insulation, breathability, strength, and comfort characteristics. Let’s see how these two fibers interact.
Physical structure
- The combination of wool and hemp in a fabric leads to a mix of characteristics: wool, with its crimped and fibrous structure, is responsible for creating air pockets and the level of fuzziness that improves thermal insulation, while hemp, which has longer and stronger fibers, provides durability and structural stability to the fabric.
- The result is a more composite structure where wool contributes to softness and heat retention, while hemp makes the fabric more resistant to wear, enhancing its overall strength and longevity.
Fibrillation and Breathability
- Wool is naturally fuzzy and has good surface fibrillation, which traps air and enhances insulation. When mixed with hemp, the presence of hemp's smoother and less fuzzy fibers helps to reduce excessive fibrillation, creating a fabric that maintains good insulation but is also more breathable and less prone to excessive surface fuzziness.
- This means that the resulting fabric will be warm yet breathable, capable of managing both heat retention and moisture control more effectively. Hemp facilitates air passage and temperature regulation, while wool traps heat.
Hygroscopicity and Moisture Management
- Wool has the ability to absorb moisture and generate heat thanks to the presence of keratin, while hemp is predominantly composed of cellulose, which is also hydrophilic but without the exothermic reaction of wool.
- By combining wool and hemp, the fabric achieves a balance in moisture management: wool absorbs some of the sweat and retains heat by generating a slight exothermic reaction, while hemp helps to disperse excess moisture and promotes quick evaporation. This leads to superior comfort, avoiding the feeling of dampness and improving the fabric’s ability to stay dry.
Elasticity and Comfort
Wool is elastic and can stretch and then return to its original shape, while hemp is stiffer and more durable. When these fibers are combined, wool provides elasticity to the fabric, allowing it to better adapt to the body and thus retain heat more effectively, while hemp increases stability and reduces wool’s tendency to stretch excessively over time.
The result is a fabric that offers an excellent balance of comfort and stability, maintaining a good fit while being more durable compared to wool alone.
Antimicrobial Properties and Sustainability
Hemp has natural antimicrobial properties, which help to prevent bacterial build-up and unpleasant odors. This feature, combined with wool (which also has some resistance to odors), creates a fabric that can stay fresher longer and requires less frequent washing.
Furthermore, both fibers are sustainable: wool is a renewable resource, and hemp grows quickly with minimal pesticide use. The combination of these fibers contributes to creating an eco-friendly material, ideal for a more sustainable approach to clothing.
